Video Games Effects on Reactions to Sudden Occurrences

Numerous studies have demonstrated that playing video games can affect a person’s physical reactions to sudden events. Gamers have been observed to have faster reaction times and better peripheral vision than non-gamers. However, it is important to note that excessive gaming can cause physical problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome and back pain.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester found that playing fast-paced action video games can improve visual attention and the ability to make rapid decisions (Green & Bavelier, 2003). The study measured participants’ heart rate and brain activity while playing a fast-paced action game and found that their heart rate increased during the game, which corresponded with increased brain activity in areas responsible for attention and decision-making.
Another study published in the Journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking found that playing video games can also increase levels of the stress hormone cortisol. However, this increase in cortisol was temporary and did not have any negative long-term effects on the participants’ health (Jennett et al., 2008).
Moreover, research has shown that playing video games can improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. A study by researchers at the University of Toronto found that participants who played video games that required precise movements, such as first-person shooters, showed enhancements in their ability to control a robotic surgical tool (Rosser et al., 2007).
Overall, while the physical reactions to sudden events in video games can be intense, they have been found to have positive effects on cognitive function and physical coordination. Nonetheless, it is important to note that excessive gaming can lead to negative health effects, and thus, it should be enjoyed in moderation.
